About Us

The Sahara Desert is full of paradoxes. It seems so empty and yet it has been populated for centuries by one of the most fascinating nomadic peoples on earth; the Touareg, or Kel Tamashek as they call themselves. The environment in which they live appears to be so harsh and cruel, yet out of it come artisans who make some of the most refined traditional artefacts to come from Africa. Amongst these craftsmen are the Touareg blacksmiths whose jewellery is renowned for its beauty, sophistication and elegance.

At Saharan Arts, we forge direct links with artisans throughout the southern Sahara in order to find the finest handcrafted jewellery whilst endeavouring to adhere to the principles of Fair Trade. The Touareg artisans are born into their time-honoured role and belong to a caste called the Kel Inedan, who are highly respected for their wonderful dexterity. Saharan Arts brings you the product of this hereditary knowledge while the secrets and symbolism remain hidden in the lonesome Saharan sands.
